Building a Voiceover Career — From Someone Who's Done It

Getting in to Voiceovers

You don’t need the most expensive kit and there is no such thing as having a  perfect voice to get started. What matters is how your understanding of your individuality, having confidence in how you speak, and gaining trust with meaningful engagement.

Step 1: Know why you’re doing it

Are you drawn to storytelling? Do you like the idea of working from home? Whatever the reason, be clear with yourself that it is a full time commitment. It helps you stay focused.

Step 2: Listen to others

Spend time listening to ads, audiobooks, radio, and podcasts. Notice the tone, pace, and style. Ask yourself: what works for you? What doesn’t? You’ll learn a lot just by paying attention.

Step 3: Practice out loud

Read scripts. Record yourself. Play it back. You’ll hear things you didn’t notice while speaking. It’s not about sounding perfect—it’s about sounding real. You have to be able to perform with transparency. Credibility is key.

Step 4: Set up a quiet space

When starting out you don’t necessarily need a studio. Just a quiet room, a decent mic, and some soft furnishings strategically placed to reduce reverberation. Keep it simple. You can upgrade later.

Step 5: Learn basic editing

You’ll need to clean up your recordings. That means cutting out mistakes, reducing background noise, and adjusting volume. Free software like Audacity works fine to start.

Step 6: Build a small demo

Pick a few short scripts—maybe a commercial, a narration, and something conversational. Record them cleanly. Keep it under two minutes. This is what you’ll share when people ask what you sound like.

Step 7: Start small

Look for beginner-friendly jobs. Local radio, small businesses, online platforms. It’s highly unlikely that you’ll land big gigs off the bat, and that’s to be expected. Every job helps you learn.

Step 8: Be consistent

Keep practicing. Keep applying. Keep improving. Voiceover work takes time to build. The more you show up, the more chances you’ll get.

Step 9: Stay honest

Don’t pretend to be something you’re not. If you’re new, say so. If you’re unsure, ask. People appreciate honesty. It builds trust. But as I mentioned previously – this is not a part time job. If you want to succeed you need to give absolute committment. The Market place is already brimming with incredible talent! There will be a place for you – but it will take time, dedication and a great marketing strategy to make it! Good luck!
